Jupiter is out of place in Capricorn. Jupiter is humor while Capricorn is ruled by the serious planet, Saturn. Jupiter believes in luck. Saturn believes you have to work hard and pay your dues. Jupiter is open while Capricorn is aware of the limitations that enclose us. Jupiter looks to the future, Capricorn has a keen awareness of the past (For more information on Capricorn, see Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn).

Where Jupiter's normal way of operating is enthusiastic opportunism, Jupiter in Capricorn does things with cautious optimism. Where Jupiter expands, sometimes without heed of the consequences, Jupiter in Capricorn expands cautiously into new arenas.

Jupiter's humor has a dark tone in Capricorn. However, Jupiter does try to lighten up the serious and stodgy Capricorn world. Jupiter in Capricorn is like telling a joke in a serious business environment. Another image, trying to make the best (Jupiter) of a difficult situation (Capricorn).

Also, since Jupiter is a positive, upbeat planet in the serious world of Capricorn, the theme for these years is light in the midest of darkness – people triumphing over adversity.  Look at the movies from 1996 for numerous examples.

The dates for Jupiter in Capricorn are (approximately every 12th year for 1 year):
12/18/2007 - 1/5/2009

12/10/11 - 1/2/13
1/19/01 - 2/8/02

1996

This was a year of limits, sometimes positively.  Nuclear test limits were a positive outcome from the year.  Limits were also set on Welfare, the so-called welfare reforms.  Within days of Jupiter entering Capricorn, a four-month long standoff between President Clinton and the Republican congress over the U.S. budget was ironed out.

Mad cows in England spread (Jupiter) fear (Saturn, ruler of Capricorn).  Dolly the Sheep – first cloning of a large animal.  Howard Stern (Capricorn) has his career take off.

The movies reflected the mood:

Independence Day: we triumph over dark disaster from the skies
Twister: we triumph over dark disaster from the skies
Mission: Impossible: Tom Cruise triumphs over crushing adversity
Jerry Maguire: Tom Cruise triumphs over crushing adversity
Ransom: Mel Gibson triumphs over crushing adversity
The Rock: you can’t get more Saturn than that – more triumph over crushing adversity
101 Dalmations: See above
Mars Attacks: see Independence Day
The English Patient: serious movie about man who is limited by injuries

1984

Michael Jackson's Thriller, the Witches of Eastwick, and the Unbearable Lightness of Being were written during this time. These books and productions all show a humor in the midst of darkness or adversity.

The Progressive Conservatives won in Canada (this oddly-named party brought to power by Jupiter, which is progressive, in Capricorn, which is conservative). Mondale/Ferraro were defeated by Reagan/Bush. But Reagan, a conservative, took some positive steps by visiting China. Reagan, although conservative, had a sense of humor.

1972

Nixon had just won re-election by a landslide while the can-of-worms that was Watergate was opening. Nixon went to China and Russia, thereby opening a closed communication path. The movie playing at the time was the Godfather while All in the Family was on TV. Fischer beat Spassky for the world chess championship. All in the Family involved humor about a closed, bigoted person. Watergate opened up (Jupiter) the closed world of a conservative presidency (Capriorn) to public view.

1960-1961

Kennedy beat Nixon, but not by much. "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" was selling well in Bookstores (Loneliness = Capricorn while Long-Distance = Jupiter). "Catch 22", "Stranger in a Strange Land", and "Jules & Jim" all had their dark comedic sides or elements of tragedy interspersed with humor. Jupiter in Capricorn seems to be a time of tragedy treated lightly or humor leading to tragedy.

Sit-ins started in Greensboro, NC. Movies of the time were Psycho and Exodus. Charles van Doren was arrested for perjury since he was given answers prior to appearing on Twenty-One.

1949

The novel 1984 was published, with its dark humor about 1948. Death of a Salesman and South Pacific were the hit musicals. Communist China, NATO, and Israel were founded. Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend was the tune (which somehow fits with Jupiter in Capricorn).

1937

Chamberlain started his policy of appeasement with Hitler (if we just keep being reasonable and upbeat in this difficult situation, I'm sure he'll come around. Sounds like Jupiter in Capricorn to me!) Snow White and the hit song "Whistle While You Work" (the Jupiter in Capricorn theme song--keep light while working hard). Elephant Boy with Sabu was another hit (Large, slow animals are a hit with Jupiter in Capricorn). Amelia Earhart was lost and the Hindenberg burned--not a good time for Jupiterian journeys with Jupiter in Capricorn.

1925

The books at this time were the Great Gatsby and An American Tragedy. The tragedy of wealth is a favorite theme with Jupiter in Capricorn. The Unemployment Insurance Act helped improve the lives of those out of work. The Charleston and crossword puzzles were the rage.

1912

The Titanic sank while the seeds of World War I were sown.
