Jove is another name for Jupiter -- a jovial person is a person who has a hearty, joyous humor. People with Jupiter strong in their chart (a lot of aspects to Jupiter or a lot of planets in Sagittarius or the ninth house) are optimistic, jovial, growth-oriented, open, and reasonable. When they have expanded egos, Jupiterians can also be overly optimistic, greedy, snobbish, and condescending. Jupiter people want to expand their knowledge, grow as people, be humorous, and remain open to new experience. They often spend time planning the future and trying to extrapolate where things are going. The two words that Jupiterians use are: ³more² and ³better².

On a broader social context, Jupiter rules the ups and downs of the economy. When Jupiter is well aspected or in a friendly sign, the economy gets a boost. For example, in a surprising number of cases, Jupiter in Virgo represents a time of economic difficulties, while Jupiter in Libra starts on the road to an improving economy.

Jupiter was recently in Libra from:

Since Libra rules culture and the arts, it is natural to expect that Jupiter in Libra is a time of growth in the arts, an openning to artistic sensitivity. In 1921-22 Jupiter in Libra was a time when women were more openly sensual, when flappers danced the fox trot and Libran parties went to all hours. In 1956-58 Elvis was sweeping the nation and rock and roll was taking off. In the 1968 - 1970 period was Woodstock and the take off of the large rock concert and the spread of rock and roll. In 1980 the Walkman was introduced allowing people to listen to music wherever they went. In 1992-3 the Clinton campaign emphasized Saxaphone and rock and roll--we had a musically inclined president.

To show how Jupiter in Libra represents economic improvement after economic difficulties, in 1921 (Jupiter in Libra) the country was coming out of a mild recession which bottomed in late 1920 (Jupiter in Virgo) -- the stock market boom started in 1922. The depth of the recession occurred in 1932 while 1933, Jupiter in Libra, represented the start of a long recovery process. The driving force which pulled the country out of the recession was the New Deal which was created while Jupiter was in Libra. In 1993 we came out of a recession which lasted through 1992 when Jupiter was in Virgo. The world bear market of 8 years reached bottom and turned around in 1970, as Jupiter swung through Libra.

Libra represents peace. In 1910 the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace was established. In 1945 with Jupiter entering Libra, the peace treaty with Japan was signed and the United Nations, an organization dedicated to peace, was formed in San Francisco. In the 1968 period the anti-war process in this country took off. In 1980, John Lennon, an activist for peace was killed.

During Uranus in Libra (1970-77), the women's liberation movement was born. During Jupiter in Libra times, women typically expand where they can take positions in society. In 1909, women were first admitted to German universities. The first permanent waves were given by London hairdressers. In 1922, the first women U.S. Senator appointed (lasted one day!). In 1946, women were given the right to vote in Italy.

For some reason, the Jupiter in Libra period was also a time of space exploration. In 1957 Sputnik came into existence. In 1968 was the Moon landing. In 1980 was the first launch of the space shuttle.

Summing up, we see that Jupiter in Libra were times of improving economies, music and art, space travel, and an interest in peace.
