Jove is another name for Jupiter -- a jovial person is a
person who has a hearty, joyous humor.
People with Jupiter strong in their chart (a lot of aspects to Jupiter
or a lot of planets in Sagittarius or the ninth house) are optimistic, jovial,
growth-oriented, open, "lucky", and reasonable. When they have expanded egos, Jupiterians
can also be overly optimistic, opportunistic, greedy, snobbish, and
condescending. Jupiter
people want to expand their knowledge, grow as people, be humorous, and remain
open to new experience. They often
spend time planning the future and trying to extrapolate where things are
going. The two words that
Jupiterians use are: "more" and "better".
On a broader social context, Jupiter rules the ups and
downs of the economy. When Jupiter
is well aspected or in a friendly sign, the economy gets a boost. For example, in a surprising number of
cases, Jupiter in Virgo represents a time of economic difficulties, while
Jupiter in Libra starts on the road to an improving economy, and Jupiter in
Scorpio initiated the actual transition to the new economic state. For example, the book "Only
Yesterday" about the 1920s states "The hopeless depression of 1921
(Jupiter in Virgo) had given way to the hopeful improvement of 1922 (Jupiter in
Libra) and the rushing revival of 1923 (Jupiter in Scorpio)."
Jupiter represents the temper of the time--what
prospers. Since what is
prospering, growing, and expanding is where the "juice" resides,
Jupiter represents the upbeat energy of that time. People are open to the sign that Jupiter is traversing.
Jupiter is the energy to improve the situation. What is improved is represented by the
sign that Jupiter is transiting.
Since Jupiter changes sign once a year, what people work to improve in a
given year is represented by Jupiter.
Scorpio is the sign of power, death, taxes, and sex. Scorpios are like poker players, they
try to find out what is in your hand while hiding their hand - they like to be
in control and powerful in a backroom way. Typical Scorpio occupations involve probing research and
removal of the diseased or decayed.
This involves poker-faced surgeons, detectives, and psychologists. Scorpios also make good executives,
money managers (Scorpio rules other people's money), archaeologists, and
garbage men.
Emotionally, Scorpios can be intense and magnetic. Sometimes this can result in the drama
queen form in which the person is proud of all the negativity they are
experiencing - they recount all the negative experiences (due to others, of
course) with relish. Higher
Scorpios are healers - they excise the negativity lurking within the body,
mind, or society. These higher
types are constantly transforming themselves, killing off the old and being
reborn into the new.
Jupiter in Scorpio are times of economic transformation and
revitalization. People work to improve
the economic situation by transforming it. By contrast, Jupiter in Libra is a period where people try
to improve their social skills, to create peace, and to slide through
harmoniously. Economically,
Jupiter in Libra tends to be a time when the economy improves.
During Jupiter in Scorpio, people are more open to sex.
When Jupiter was in Libra, people felt that they could let things slide. With Jupiter in Scorpio, action is
demanded. Jupiter in Scorpio's
motto is "just do it!". Jupiter
in Libra's motto was "let George do it". Jupiter in Scorpio wants sex to be better, to improve.
Humor, ruled by Jupiter, tends to be more openly cynical
and sexual with Jupiter in Scorpio.
Jupiter in Scorpio humor often has a macabre, sarcastic, or sardonic
bite. For example, Alfred
Hitchcock was born with Jupiter in Scorpio.
Look at the headlines from 1994, the last time Jupiter was
in Scorpio. Lorraine Bobbitt was
in the news as Jupiter entered Scorpio.
Clinton was accused of sexual harassment while Governor of
Arkansas. O.J. Simpson was
arrested in killings of wife Nicole Brown Simpson and friend, Ronald Goldman.
Well, maybe these weren't great examples of improved sexuality - but sex was
definitely in the news.
In 1947 the play "A Streetcar Named Desire" came
out with its intense sexuality ("Stella!").
The Flavr Savr tomato, the first genetically-engineered
food product approved by the FDA (genetics works on the seeds, hence genetics
comes under Scorpio). Calves were
cloned for the first time.
In 1982 Michael Jackson introduced "Thriller"
which shows the Scorpio influence while "Bette Davis eyes" which
talks about a woman with intensely sexual, magnetic eyes. "Double Fantasy" with its
erotic cover was in the stores.
Unfortunately, Jupiter in Scorpio also seems to be times of
massacre, with Sarajevo, the Rwandan genocide, and with Christian Phalangists
killing hundreds in two Palestine refugee camps and the massacres in the
Philippines in 1899 by the U.S. government (it seems, it being a guerrilla war
supported by the populace, that the U.S. soldiers couldn't tell the insurgents
from the populace. In those days
the answer was simple - the order to kill every man, woman, and child over 10
years old was given! For more
information, see pages 305 to 313 of the "People's History of the United
States" - what has happened in Vietnam and is now happening in Iraq and
Haiti is not, unfortunately, at all new when the U.S. fights a guerrilla
insurgency supported by the people).
Scientifically, theories of radiation, atomic structure,
and magnetism have been proposed with Jupiter in Scorpio. Advances in magnetic recording of sound
and pictures were advanced while Jupiter was in Scorpio. For example, the first Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) diagnostic machines were introduced in Britain in
1982. In 1947, P.M.S Blackett
advances the theory that all massive rotating bodies are magnetic (Pluto, which
rules Scorpio and magnetism was conjunct Saturn in Leo at the time). The transistor, which works with
magnetism at an atomic level, was invented at Bell Labs.
In 1934 the New Deal, which was initiated in 1933 with
Jupiter in Libra, was starting to take off resulting in a whole new
relationship of government to private business. The Marshall Plan in Europe, in which the United States
helped rebuild the European economies after the devastation of World War II,
was undertaken in 1946 with Jupiter in Scorpio. The Great Leap Forward in China, a plan for economic
revitalization, was undertaken in 1958.
In the 1898 period Rutherford discovered radiation,
magnetic recording of speech was first demonstrated, and, in literature, Ibsen
wrote "When We Dead Awaken", Tolstoy wrote "Resurrection",
and Wilde wrote "The Importance of Being Earnest".
During 1911 Rutherford put forth a theory of atomic
structure, and National Health Insurance was introduced in England.
In 1923 Eliot wrote "The Waste Land", Hesse wrote
"Siddhartha", Joyce wrote "Ulysses" (and had a difficult
time with the U.S. Post Office), Mussolini formed a fascist government, and the
Ku Klux Klan gained power. Sound
for Motion Pictures was invented.
During 1935 the Wealth Tax Act passed, Rumba was in as a
dance, and Social Security was enacted.
The years of Jupiter in Scorpio
brought out the worst and best in people.
Fascism rose, but also Social Security and the Marshall Plan. In any case, Jupiter in Scorpio years
were intense years in which difficulties in society were uncovered, and often,
improved upon.
