Jove is another name for Jupiter -- a jovial person is a person who has a hearty, joyous humor. People with Jupiter strong in their chart (a lot of aspects to Jupiter or a lot of planets in Sagittarius or the ninth house) are optimistic, jovial, growth-oriented, open, and reasonable. When they have expanded egos, Jupiterians can also be overly optimistic, greedy, snobbish, and condescending. Jupiter people want to expand their knowledge, grow as people, be humorous, and remain open to new experience. They often spend time planning the future and trying to extrapolate where things are going. The two words that Jupiterians use are: "more" and "better".
Jupiter has been in Leo for the past year. During this time people have wanted to have more fun, to party, to i mprove their social standing, etc. People have also had absurd egoic enlargements during this last year -- people wanted to be "lionized". There is a tendency to be extravagent with Jupiter in Leo, to overdo the generosity of Leo.
The transition from Leo to Virgo is always difficult. Where Leo can be exuberant overindulgence and a craving for partying and fun, Virgo is the hard worker and health/cleanliness freak of the zodiac. If Leo is like a party, then Virgo would be the cleanup and hangover afterwards. Although Virgo has been associated with illness, it appears to be a reaction to overindulgence in Leo. Don't overindulge (and stop trying to "push it" as the transition from Leo to Virgo is made) and the illness of Virgo will not materialize.
Ah, but that is the problem. During the Leo period everything was going so well. As limitations and a narrowing of focus takes place in Virgo, as hard work replaces an easy talent, people must transition into the new consciousness. It is hard to have what was easy become harder, to work for what formerly came easy.
Since Jupiter takes approximately 12 years to circle the zodiac, these dates are about 12 years from each other and each lasts about a year. Jupiter is in its detriment in Virgo, where the detriment of a planet is in a sign opposite to one it rules. Since Jupiter rules Pisces, and since Virgo is opposite Pisces, we see that Jupiter is in its detriment in Virgo.
When a planet is in its detriment it literally works against itself. For example, we would expect Jupiter in Virgo to be a proliferation of small details, an expansion of facts, a sense of superiority based on knowledge of facts or superiority based upon cleanliness or orderliness.
People born with Jupiter in Virgo are often overwhelmed by details. They get overly worried by inconsequential details - they lose sight of the larger picture. Jupiter in Virgo periods sometimes have these qualities for individuals.
However, when we look back on the history of the above periods, we find them to be difficult periods but not necessarily negative. In fact, these were times of healing. This makes sense if we see that Virgo is illness or faults which Jupiter improves upon. So, Jupiter in Virgo is a time of improving psychological, social, political, or physical health. These were times of cleaning house, of technical improvement, and of improving efficiency.
For example, the 1932-1933 period was when Franklin Delano Roosevelt put through the New Deal which started the process of healing the economy and ending the depression. In fact, the turnaround point on the stock market, which crashed in 1929, came in mid-1932 when Jupiter entered Virgo. The other vital signs of the economy turned upward during the 1932-33 time period. Although Prohibition wasn't actually defeated until late 1933, the wheels to turn it back were started in early 1933.
The push of the allies resulting in victory in World War II started within days of Jupiter entering Virgo (Normandy) and ended within days of Jupiter leaving Virgo (Nagasaki, VJ day). In a way, the push to reclaim Europe could be seen as the cleaning of the wound caused by the axis powers.
The 1967-69 period, which followed the Summer of Love, was a time when America came to grips with some of the illnesses in the society. The magazines of the time lamented the American focus on the illnesses of the society without looking at the redeeming qualities. During this time the spirit of the Uranus-Pluto conjunct in Virgo (which lasted from 1963-1969) was spread.
The 1955-1957 period was during the Sputnik era when there was the fight to improve the technical education in the schools and gain superiority over the USSR technically (since we were obviously behind). This was a time of lamentation about what was wrong with us morally and technically. Integration, the start of a healing of the racial problems in this country, was initiated during this timeframe.
Each of these transits of Jupiter through Virgo was different because the problems/illnesses facing the people of the time were different and the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) were different. During the last Jupiter in Virgo, we had a Uranus-Neptune conjunct in Capricorn and Pluto in Scorpio. This was a time of dissolving of structures based on reality. Nowhere was this more obvious than in the USSR where the structure dissolved in favor of one based on mutual advantage and freer choice.
In this country, the ills of the 1990s had to do with the constant cutbacks in education and social services leaving us at the mercy of foreign competitors and with numerous homeless people. As studies have shown, homeless people tend to increase during recessions -- however, they used to be tied into the system through welfare, in each state, which at least paid for their rooms in boarding houses. In the last period we had masses of disaffected people on our streets with no social connection. The polls showed the result in San Francisco where homelessness was by far the greatest problem listed by the residents.
We can expect there to be a push to improve education (elementary education is ruled by Virgo), to diagnose and cure the current social ills of this society, and to improve ourselves technically. It is about time.
