This is an important year astrologically, as well as being the start of a new millennium. The main event is the Jupiter - Saturn conjunct, but there are other interesting aspects.
The main interest is the Jupiter-Saturn conjunct in an earth sign after the first conjunct in an air sign in 1980. This is part of a 200 year cycle of the Jupiter-Saturn conjuncts happening in progressive elements (see Jupiter - Saturn conjunct for more details).
Jupiter goes through three different signs (Aries, Taurus, and Gemini) and Saturn through two (Taurus and Gemini). The Jupiter-Saturn conjunct takes place in Taurus. Because this conjunct is happening this year, a liberal, open period of ten years will be initiated. However, with Jupiter and Saturn going through the signs of rugged individualism, people will tend to care more about themselves than others on a material level.
Together with Uranus in Aquarius, Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto in Sagittarius all the outer planets will be tending towards a more open and liberal time. Friendship, humanitarianism, and humanism will combine with the earthy comfort of Taurus to create more practical and solid relationships between people. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto will counter-balance the more selfish downfalls of Jupiter and Saturn at the start of the zodiac.
The end of the year will be particulary difficult with Saturn entering Gemini (see Saturn in Gemini). Of course, the start of the year won't be a picnic either with the Jupiter and Saturn squaring Neptune and Uranus in Aquarius. In particular, the square of Saturn in Taurus and Uranus in Aquarius will be hard (see Overview of 1999 for a complete description since this will be the final occurrence of this square).
Outside of Saturn square Uranus, the rest of the outer planet aspects this year are to Jupiter. Makes sense, since Jupiter is transitting three signs! Jupiter squares last for about a week prior to and after the date given. However, the Jupiter - Saturn cycle which is kicked off by the Jupiter - Saturn conjunct lasts for 20 years!
Jupiter in Taurus square Neptune in Aquarius pits practical, solid material expansion for myself against "impractical" dreams of people being more friendly and working in groups to dedicate themselves to helping others in the larger picture.
On a personal level, this square would pit a nice job and a secure future against a dream which is totally outside your normal reality. Everyone will be facing this type of choice in mid March.
Jupiter in Taurus square Uranus in Aquarius in mid May is more dramatic than Jupiter square Neptune. In this case the solid, dependable "future" is pitted against a sudden impulse to be free, to get out of this staid existence you are stuck in. There must be more to life than simply expanding your portfolio or putting money in your sock drawer.
At the start of May, all seven inner planets (Sun through Jupiter) will be in Taurus with only Uranus - Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto in Sagittarius. For more info, see the huge stellium on May 3rd, 2000 in Taurus page.
Jupiter conjunct Saturn in late May is the start of a 20 year cycle. It's also part of a 200 year cycle, but as a kickback. For the last 200 years we have had this conjunct in earth signs -- the period of the industrial revolution. In 1980 we had it in an air sign -- the computer/internet revolution took off and we had our first "media" president, Ronald Reagan.
The conjuncts portray where the financial/material power is based. For the 200 years prior to 1980, the answer was in production. The captains of industry ruled. For the last 20 years it has been knowledge workers -- air. Most of the richest people in the world are computer people.
This year, and for 20 years to come, we will have a throwback to the industrial revolution and earth power. We won't go back, exactly. Instead, we'll have to make the information age a bit more grounded. For more detail, see Jupiter - Saturn conjunct.
Jupiter in Gemini trines Neptune in Aquarius in late July and early December. People will be bubbling with new ideas, new dreams. Everyone will be talking, perhaps talking too much!, about their dreams and all the things they need to do. With any luck, people will be coming out of the closet and talking about spiritual matters that are important to them. Fortunately, with Neptune in Aquarius, people are both more open about their oddness and more inclined to live and let live, religiously and culturally speaking.
The opposition of Jupiter in Gemini to Pluto in Sagittarius pits intellectual growth against true learning, true wisdom. Jupiter in Gemini does a million things before breakfast while Pluto in Sagittarius asks, "yes, but what is TRUTH?" The image is a talkative, or overly talkative, student bumping heads with a famous philospher who won't stand for any crap. "Just be who you are, be REAL" says Pluto in Sagittarius, "don't focus on the small things".
This opposition is a reality check on the heedless nervous rushing of Jupiter in Gemini ("It's been a Hard Day's Night" was written with Jupiter in Gemini). Look at the forest instead of (or, at least, besides) dancing around the trees.
I suppose it is to be expected that when a millennium ends there
will be some major changes and shifting of gears. Happy
Millennium from all of us at Guiding Star!
