Overview of 2005

Only two planets change sign this year, Jupiter and Saturn.  Both enter signs where they are more compatible.  Saturn which starts the year in Cancer, where its coolness, impersonality, and limitation stifles the emotionality of the sign, moves into Leo in July.  At least in Leo, it adds depth to the Leo creativity and drama - when it isn't being a wet blanket on Leo's fun (see Saturn in Leo).

Jupiter will be in Libra until October 26th, when it enters Scorpio.  Jupiter does well in Libra, where it increases the social life and improves the economy.  It does better in Scorpio.  There it adds humor and opens up the hidden Scorpio, making it more accessible and less serious (see Jupiter in Scorpio).

The remaining outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto remain in their signs.  Uranus is still in Pisces, Neptune is in Aquarius, and Pluto is in Sagittarius.  Neptune in Aquarius gives us nebulous fears (and demagoguery about these fears) but also allows us to have faith in science and to bring together science and faith.  Pluto in Sagittarius gives power to religion and makes those who are religious become fanatically proselytizing.  However, it also makes people speak truth to power, explore new paradigms for power, and uncover the truth with zeal.  See Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto in Sagittarius for more details.

Uranus in Pisces lightens the Neptune in Aquarius.  With Uranus ruling Aquarius where Neptune is placed and Neptune ruling Pisces where Uranus is placed, this puts them in "mutual dispositorship".  This has some of the qualities of a conjunction of these two planets.  Uranus is in the more humorous Pisces.  Here the oddness of Uranus is looked upon with humor rather than fear.  And revolutionaries are looked upon as freeing from the old rather than forcing change upon the fearful.  For more information, see Uranus in Pisces.

There are three Saturn aspects, at the beginning, the middle, and at the end of the year.  Let's look at the first two aspects.

Saturn quincunxes Pluto on January 20th and again on May 24th  (the first quincunx was in July 31, 2004).  This aspect of Saturn and Pluto is the first since 2001, when it helped precipitate the 9/11 crisis.  The relationship of Saturn to Pluto is between the structure of authority  (Saturn) and the masses (Pluto).  In 2001 it was Saturn in Gemini opposed to Pluto in Sagittarius.  This represented the control of communication, transportation, and the media with Saturn in Gemini versus religious fury (Pluto in Sagittarius).  We know how that turned out.

Saturn opposed Pluto is a time when the entrenched establishment is furthest removed from reality as the mass of the people see it.  The quincunx is the first step where the establishment is forced to deal, in a skewed and often clumsy fashion, with reality.  The masses and the establishment are out of synch at this point.

President Bush, representing Satun in Cancer, aligned himself with the religious right (the domestic side of Pluto in Sagittarius) despite the cross purposes (quincunx) of the constituency (living wages, health care, a fair shake from their bosses, constitutional rights, etc).  He dipped into his Cancer and came across as the caring, down home, authority figure.

In January and May this out-of-synch dance continues, but with a little more force.  It is possible there could be some rifts as the authorities are forced to deal with the realities of the masses.

On a more personal level, the Pluto in Sagittarius impulse to travel, to explore new territory, to grow, to speak truth to power, is held back and creates stress with the need to be conservative and stay within the bounds of fear of Saturn in Cancer.

The week around March 14th can be really social.  You can advance your dreams through partnership with others.  Jupiter in Libra means improvement through social contacts and by forming partnerships to achieve mutual goals.

When this same Jupiter in Libra drive quincunxes Uranus in Pisces on May 8th, you find yourself questioning whether you have enough freedom in relationship, and this need for freedom grates on your partnerships. July 8th repeats the energy of May 8th, but with a bit more force.

On July 15th, Saturn enters Leo resulting in people being less fearful and conservative.  However, control can be more overbearing with Saturn in Leo than it was in Cancer.

August 17th is a repeat of March 14th, where Jupiter in Libra trines Neptune in Aquarius again.  However, this time you can really run with it - the connections made this time are more solid.  Sometimes connections made in March will be reconfirmed now.

September 18th sees Jupiter in Libra sextiling Pluto in Sagittarius.  Here political change works hand-in-hand with a word of mouth spreading of that change.  Transformation is effortless when done with others.  This is a good time to explore new possibilities with others.

On October 26th, Jupiter enters Scorpio and then trines Uranus in Pisces on November 27th. People will likely feel an intense need to grow out of confining situations, to break free.  They will want to have more humor in their life, to laugh at difficulties and break out of nebulosity and into clarity.

The final aspect of the year is a major one.  Jupiter in Scorpio squares Saturn in Leo.  This aspect is the halfway point between the conjunct of Jupiter and Saturn back in 2000 (see Jupiter Saturn Conjunct for more information) and the opposition in 2010 which ends the expansive phase initiated by the conjunction.   Sardonic levity battles with dramatic seriousness - "don't make a sarcastic joke out of this, this is serious stuff!"  People's striving to improve themselves through transformation feel like they are being held back by entrenched ego which tries to dramatically and overbearingly stop what they are doing.
