Overview of 2010

Two outer planets change sign this year, Jupiter enters Pisces and then Aries while Uranus enters Aries. We'll describe Jupiter and Uranus in their old and new signs.

Jupiter in Aquarius brings out the more upbeat side of Neptune in Aquarius by being in the same sign. Although Jupiter is associated with the fear side of Aquarius, we have already been through most of that with Neptune there. I am hopeful that Jupiter here will result in positive social change and going beyond the limitations of class structure (seen in prior transits).

Jupiter in Pisces is in its own sign -- although good for music, arts, and compassion for the poor, it is not so good for the economy since any latent economic weakness can cause an unraveling of the economy. Fortunately, we seem to have shored up our economic problems somewhat and we have Saturn in Libra to add stability...

Jupiter in Aries is direct -- life is shown in its raw aspect. Greed can lead to falls and economics can get overheated. Fortunately, we have Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra to moderate this.

Saturn in Virgo was from September 2, 2007 to October 29, 2009 and then from April 7, 2010 to July 21, 2010. This placement is part of the problem with the economy. When Saturn transited Leo in 2005 through 2007 (with Pluto in Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter), the economy got overheated with speculative fever in derivatives and real estate -- we came down from that soon after Saturn entered Virgo (see prior periods of Saturn in Virgo in the link above) while Pluto entered Capricorn. Saturn in Virgo makes you slog through the illness and take the medicine.

Saturn in Libra happens from October 29, 2009 to April 7, 2010 and then from July 21, 2010 to October 5, 2012. Saturn is exalted in Libra, this is the best place in the zodiac for it. Although this placement usually is positive both socially and economically, there is the final Saturn - Uranus opposition in 2010 which might upset things this year (with oppositions in February, 2009 and September, 2009 leading up to that).

Pluto just changed signs in late 2008, coinciding with the election of Obama and the acceleration of the economic recession. This is a major change -- since Pluto takes 248 years to circle the zodiac, the last time it entered Capricorn was in 1762 (it remained there until 1778). See Pluto in Capricorn for more details. Pluto entering Capricorn will color the entire year --this is the end of a two-year period with Pluto at the start of Capricorn that have been times of major transformation in the past.

Uranus and Neptune remain in their signs.  Uranus is still in Pisces, Neptune is in Aquarius.  Neptune in Aquarius gives us nebulous fears (and demagoguery about these fears) but also allows us to have faith in science and to bring together science and faith (personally, I believe in intelligent design -- the method: evolution!).   See Neptune in Aquarius for more details.

Uranus in Pisces lightens the Neptune in Aquarius.  With Uranus ruling Aquarius where Neptune is placed and Neptune ruling Pisces where Uranus is placed, this puts them in "mutual dispositorship".  This has some of the qualities of a conjunction of these two planets.  Uranus is in the more humorous Pisces.  Here the oddness of Uranus is looked upon with humor rather than fear (as it was in Aquarius).  And revolutionaries are looked upon as freeing from the old rather than forcing change upon the fearful.  Change (Uranus) is focused on dreams (Pisces). For more information, see Uranus in Pisces. The nebulous fears of Neptune in Aquarius are punctured by Uranus in Pisces -- want to stop the fearmongerers, bring humor (for more info, watch Tina Fey reruns on Saturday Night Live).

Uranus in Aries is like Jupiter in Aries in that there is can be a frenzied excitement -- Uranus in Aries has been associated with get-rich-quick schemes and greed. However, sometimes the effects are ultimately beneficial -- without the gold rush of 1849 there would be no San Francisco Bay Area as we now know it.

There's a T-Square of Saturn at the start of Libra, opposing Jupiter conjunct Uranus at the start of Aries and all the planets square to Pluto at the start of Capricorn towards the end of July. Cardinal signs initiate new ways of being -- Libra, Aries, and Capricorn are all cardinal and the start of these signs are the most initiatory part. Jupiter and Uranus in Aries will be the excitable, greedy, warlike energy we talked about (although there will also be a more healthy youthful component that wants to start something new) but Saturn will oppose it and will urge moderation and peacefulness based on the wisdom of old age. Finally, Pluto, representing power and reality, will be very conservative (and, hopefully, constructive) and will try to reign in both sides. Unbridled greed must be regulated, of course, but the more exuberant youthful energies shouldn't be stifled by blind conservatism.

There are some Saturn aspects.  Saturn aspects last for about 2 weeks, a week and a half before the date given and a week after. Jupiter aspects, in contrast, only last a week total (3 or 4 days before and 2-3 days afterwards).

Saturn opposing Uranus only happens approximately every 45 years, but lasts through three or four oppositions spread over three years. Prior times were 1918 - 1920 and 1965-1967. During these times people demanded change (the planet of change directly confronts the planet of conservative authority) and, towards the end, a youth rebellion was started that lasted for three or more years beyond the last opposition. The first opposition was the day of the American presidential election (Nov 5, 2008) and had everything to do with the candidates saying they represented either change or were "mavericks" (both change and maverick are Uranian words). The four oppositions occur on November 5, 2008, February 5, 2009, September 15, 2009, April 26, 2010, and July 26, 2010. All the oppositions are in Virgo - Pisces except the last in 2010 which is at 0 degrees 25 minutes Libra to Aries. The outlines of the youth rebellion should start to become obvious as the oppositions occur -- however, the nature will be changed by the Aries - Libra opposition this year.

The Mars retrograde starts on December 20th and ends on March 10th in 2010, we can again move forward with vigor -- during late December of 2009 through early March of 2010 your creative juices, your need to have fun and be lively, will be inhibited -- just plan on it. It's a time to work inwardly on improving your self-expression and awakening your creativity. If you are an artist, it's time to look inwardly to find what you are passionate about. When Mars goes retrograde, everybody has some level of frustration. Near the start of the retrograde (Dec. 20) there is a sense of being on a treadmill (you are trying to go forward, but all your energy is in neutral and you are spinning your wheels) -- Mars, which rules desire and physical energy, has come to a stop and is about to go into reverse.

During Mars retrograde there is low energy, tiredness, and lack of will. People who rely on clients (hello, fellow astrologers!) will have people excitedly call up (Mars in Leo) and then flame out within minutes, think I can't because (fill in the blank), and refuse to return calls. Like I said, the flame of desire goes out easily and quickly. Finally, around March 10th expect some blowups as people who have been repressing can finally "express themselves" (motto here: don't repress). The more calm among us can finally get moving again with positivity.

Mars retrograde works on the "space" for Mars -- so rather than competing, this is a better time to prepare for competing with training. Unfortunately, the athletes must compete under this difficult aspect in the Olympics!

Of course, throughout the year Mercury retrogrades happen. January 11th through February 2nd, May 7th through May 31st, September 7th through September 29th, and December 20th through January 15th in 2010. During these times it is best to work on thoughts and writings that have already occurred, not a time to start new ones. Better to edit than to write new prose.  Better to fix than to create.  Better to take a writing class than to write.  People's communications, personal gadgets, and mail all break down. Of course, vows and contracts would be best put off until the retrograde ends (ie, bad time to do your wedding vows unless, perhaps, you are both editors or critics).
