S A T U R N I N A R I E S
This is a difficult placement for Saturn. Saturn likes structure, order, limits while Aries wants to break out of restraints and limitations. Aries wants direct communication without any impediments.
In fact, Saturn is in its fall in Aries (since it is in its exaltation in Libra). Aries wants to tear down the walls of Saturnian limitation, or at least push them. On the more positive side, Saturn in Aries tends to be a time of social change and righting of wrongs. For some reason, newspapers and news sources were founded with Saturn in Aries. The music of these times have a turbulent, strident flavor (from the Aries). Rights (Aries) are established (Saturn). Scientifically, Saturn in Aries is the study of force and energy, with an emphasis on the conservation (Saturn) of energy (Aries is a fire sign).
When Saturn enters Aries it starts a 29-year cycle of the zodiac. This is the start of a new cycle of structures. The
old structures dissolved while Saturn was in Pisces, the new structures have their start with Saturn in Aries.
The most recent incursions of Saturn into Aries:
in 1900s
4/7/96 - 6/9/98, 10/25/98 - 3/1/99
3/3/67 - 4/29/69

1967-1969
Summer of 1967 was the Summer of Love. Although the Uranus - Pluto conjunct in Virgo which created the energy of the 60s was separating (by the end of 69 it was out of eight degree orb), the Saturn in Aries created a burst of anti-establishment energy. In fact, these years were more revolutionary than the years when the Uranus - Pluto conjunct was peaking (in 1964).
The Six Day War of Israel vs. Arabs happened then. Thurgood Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court and there was a black power meeting in Newark, NJ. Martin Luther King lead the anti-Vietnam war march.
On the screen: Blow Up, Bonnie & Clyde, Belle de Jour, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Funny Girl, the Odd Couple, In Cold Blood, The Lion in Winter, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rosemary's Baby.
The novels were often macho, heavy, or psychedelic: True Grit, Last Unicorn, Airport, The Crying Game, Myra Breckinridge, and the Electric Cool Aid Acid Test. "Hair" was playing in the theatre.
Songs: Hey Jude, Mrs. Robinson. Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, the Stones, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, etc were at their peak during Saturn in Aries.
This was a time of massive student riots and turmoil. Everyone was very serious (Saturn) about their causes (Aries).
But, there was also a move to limit (Saturn) violence and aggression (Aries). There were no death penalty executions in the U.S. during 1968. The push was for peace, to end the war in Vietnam. If you limit the aggressiveness of Aries, you tend to the opposite which is the peacefulness of Libra.
John Lennon and the Beatles represented both the aggressive quality of Saturn in Aries as well as the more
peaceful side. Much of the music of this period was forceful and loud, by the standards of the time. Since Aries
fights for a cause, Saturn in Aries pushes for new structures, or to tear down the old structures. Many of the
structures created at the time (large rock concerts, health food stores, etc) are still here.
1937-1939
This was the final period leading up to World War II. Overlaying Saturn was Pluto entering Leo some 40 years after the conjunct of Pluto with Neptune in Gemini (which only happens once every 492 years). The 40 years following this conjunct are often a series of difficult times as the world adjusts. Saturn entering Aries helped strengthen the serious aggression of Hitler (serious (Saturn) aggression (Aries)).
In 1937, Chamberlain, who was prime minister of Britain, decided upon a policy of appeasement to Hitler while Hitler was trying to get all he could (Jupiter in Pisces). This appeasement policy could be seen as the need to limit strife that we have already seen for Saturn in Aries. Winston Churchill fought the policy of Chamberlain to no avail, but was made prime minister at the end of this period (Jupiter in Aries), when war started.
During Saturn in Aries the establishment becomes more martial. Japan began a more aggressive war policy at this point. Japan took their invasion of China much further. Until the orders from WWII started coming in, this was a recessionary period. But it was during this period that the new forms of capitalism in the U.S. took shape. A new form of war, blitzkrieg, based on motorized planes and tanks, was brought into being by the Germans.
1937 had both Saturn in Aries and Jupiter in Capricorn, just like most of 1996. Jupiter is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, which in turn is in Aries. Therefore, there is an expansiveness (Jupiter) arising out of a thrust into new forms of structured action (Saturn in Aries).
The jet engine (based on fiery exhaust) and the proof of cosmic radiation by the use of photographic plates were two scientific changes which have qualities of Saturn in Aries.
In music, Bartok, and the Peer Gynt Opera had the appropriate intensity and fiery quality.
In business, the forty-hour work week was institutionalized but the House Un-American Activities Committee was also founded.
On Sept. 1, 1939 Hitler took actions which led to war, but he had been initiating aggressive actions throughout
this 2-1/2 year period.
1908-1910
These were the years of the Young Turks, a great image for Saturn in Aries. The Union of South Africa, with its forceful, authoritarian energy, was established during this time. The Ashcan School with its realistic, gritty portrayals of life started then. Ford built the first model T and General Motors was founded (the start of major corporate structures). The first newsreels, the first perms, and bakelite, the first plastic all got started during these years.
Women were admitted to German Universities. In general, Saturn in Aries seems to be a good time for women's rights to be furthered. This goes against the image of Aries and Saturn as such masculine energies, but the record shows that this happened.
The Boy Scouts was founded to give structure and morals (Saturn) to youth (Aries). Since Aries rules iron and
steel and Saturn rules structure, it is appropriate that the first glass and steel building was built in these years.
1878-1880
Britain was in a "jingoist" war fever. Stalin and Trotsky were born--they later went on to establish the USSR. "Return of the Native" and "The Doll's House", two novels about oppressed women, were written during this time. In "The Doll's House" the protagonist breaks out of the play world of a good little wife.
Ben Hur and the Brother's Karamazov, both intense, dramatic novels of steely (Aries), tough (Saturn) people were written with Saturn in Aries.
In science, canned foods (contained in metal), Edison and the lightbulb, and saccharin were invented. Both
Einstein and Maxwell were born who were scientific pioneers.
1849-1851
The Scarlet Letter and Moby Dick were both intense tales of repression and the tragic consequences. Tragedies resulting from repression seem to be a theme during Saturn in Aries.
In science, the speed of light was measured, the theory of energy conservation was proposed, and the laws of thermodynamics and electromagnetic induction were discovered.
The first reform schools for children foreshadowed the Boy Scouts, but in a more repressive vein. The New
York Times was founded.
1819-1821
Ivanhoe with its iron-clad knights was written during these years. The first labor laws (12 hours per day was the
maximum that you could work a child!) show the emphasis on human rights. The Manchester Guardian was
founded. Oersted, Faraday, and Ampere discovered the laws of electrodynamics, electromagnetism, and
thermoelectricity. Susan B. Anthony was born--she fought for women's rights.
1790-1792
The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. La Marseilllaise was written (with its martial flair). The Libel Act was passed in Britain (limiting the range of anger). Faraday was born. Paine wrote the Rights of Man. Wollencraft wrote "The Vindication of the Rights of Women". The Observer was founded in London. Mozart wrote the Magic Flute.
In summary, the issues with Saturn in Aries are human rights, breaking free of limits and repression, controlling anger and vindictiveness, a martial spirit to the populace, and scientific breakthroughs in light, heat, and energy.
