Saturn represents the energy of old age, of seriousness, of limitation, of defensiveness and fear. However, it also is the power to get it together, to accomplish, to conserve, and to focus. When Saturn transits a sign, people get serious about that sign and decide they need structure in that sign. Saturn is like an old man or a conservative banker - each step is taken carefully since any misstep can create problems that last for years. Saturn transits make you feel tired and slow, like old age. The image for Saturn is Father Time - he is the headmaster for the school of hard knocks. Saturn is the planet of experience.
Leo is the kingly sign which is ruled by the Sun. Leo has the qualities of liveliness, fun, entertainment, games, self-expression, creativity, and grandiosity. In a business, Leo is the boss. Leos love to be the center of attention, the life of the party. Even quiet Leos have a presence about them. Leos love to gamble, to bluff, to have a harem. People are prized for their loyalty. Leo is the sign of living, of life.
When Saturn crosses Leo, drama becomes more serious - life becomes more serious. It is no coincidence that during one Saturn in Leo period the movies included the tragedies of Hamlet and Macbeth. There is a certain puritanical quality because Saturn is fearful of, and tries to put the brakes on, the fun of Leo. Mrs. Grundy was introduced on stage during a Saturn in Leo period. The U.S. Post Office burned "Ulysses" by James Joyce for obscenity during another such period.
Establishing institutions comes under Saturn. When Saturn is in Leo, we would expect institutions involving sports and games, entertainment, energy, or life in general to be created. The U.S. Department of Energy was established by Jimmy Carter in 1976, when he warned that the energy crisis was the moral equivalent of war. He felt that our dependence on Middle East oil was profoundly dangerous. Ronald Reagan put him down as a serious alarmist when there was nothing to worry about (Mr. Reagan worked for General Electric for years). Events have shown that, just maybe, there might have been some cause for alarm.
Duing a Saturn in Leo period the Professional Golfer's Association, the PGA, was established. The Theater Guild of New York was founded as well. The National Association of Baseball Players was established in 1859 while in 1860 the British Open Golf Championship started. The Smithsonian and the London Zoo were established in 1829. The Smithsonian shows the history of life in the United States. The first Rose Bowl happened with Saturn in Leo. RCA and the Julliard School of Music were founded - both are in the entertainment field.
The first Sunday baseball game happened at the Polo Grounds, and the participants were arrested, of course. The blue laws permitted having fun on a Sunday!
In 1977 British scientists completed the first complete genetic structure (Saturn) of a living organism (Leo). This same year the first test tube baby was born - talk about life through structure. The structure of the Sun's magnetic field was plotted from a spacecraft. Einstein's theory of relativity was confirmed through observing light rays affected by gravity during an eclipse of the Sun. Herschel discovers existence of infrared solar rays. The neutron bomb which destroys life, but not structures was unveiled. When Saturn conjuncted Pluto, which rules magnetism, in Leo the theory that "all massive rotating bodies are magnetic" was enunciated.
These times have not been good for unions. Taft-Hartley, which limited unions, was enacted with Saturn in Leo. The IWW, the wobblies, were raided. The suffragettes were jailed. The bosses were into control and limitation of employees.
The first self-help book was published in 1859. Saturn tries to be independent, to not depend on others. In Leo, Saturn accomplishes in life without help.
"Is it live or is it Memorex?" is a question for these times. Making live performances last through recording is advanced. In fact, getting rid of live performances for records happened in the mid-70s with Disco. The transistor and the long-playing record were invented in the mid 1940s. In 1917 the first jazz recordings were made. The first battery of zinc and copper, which makes energy last, was invented in 1800. Eastman perfected the first Kodac box camera.
Investigations and discoveries about life in ancient times happened during these times. In the late 1940s the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered and the Laws of Hammurabi, from the 18th century B.C;, were reconstructed. In 1799 the Rosetta stone and a perfectly preserved mammoth were discovered (the latter in Siberia).
Not only was serious drama performed in these times, but seriously dramatic story tellers were born with Saturn in Leo: John F. Kennedy, Leonard Bernstein, Georges Seurat, Eugene O'Neill, Irving Berlin, Delacroix, and Jules Verne. There is a "heavy" drama to each of these people's work.
