Qualities of Uranus in Aries periods:
Innovations in sports and electronics, especially communications (BBC, radio, telegraphs)
Start of newspapers and electronic communications
Drive for instant wealth -- get rich quick (stock market bubble of 1928 with stock market overheating, gold rush of 1849)
Times of callous greed by the rich in the face of catastrophe (Great Depression in US in 1929 with food being dumped and wealth hoarded, Irish Potato Famine with callousness by England)
Conflicting forces of freedom and rights for individuals battle with autocracy.
Freedom from anger and tyranny
Advances in medicine
New visions of the world and fiery revolutionaries (Communist Manifesto and Revolutions of 1848)
Uranus rules what excites the masses and where their vision is focused. This planet insists on being different, odd, and unusual. It rebels against the qualities of whatever sign it finds itself. When Uranus enters Aries it is starting another cycle of the zodiac. It’s simultaneously completing and starting a new cycle. Aries is the sportsperson and the innovator. Aries like forthright, direct communication. New technology is used to gain rights for the populace or to gain power for individuals. Examples are the use of radio in the 1930s for politics by Hitler and Roosevelt, and telegraphs in the 1840s to spread revolution in 1848. Uranus in Aries can either be a drive for personal power or a drive to secure everyone their rights – these two forces come into conflict when the more powerful want to have power over others and the less powerful want their rights secured. New ways of viewing the world, revolutionary viewpoints, come about when Uranus enters Aries – often with respect to our place in the universe. Communications, both physical such as newspapers, and electronic, such as telegraphs, are advanced. People want to be able to find out about the world and others fast. These can be times of greed. People are alive with get rich schemes. Those already rich want more money and can step on those who are poor. Curiously, medicine advances during Uranus in Aries.
1927-1935 Neptune in Leo, Virgo (1929), Pluto in Cancer
Mass communications, in this case radio, was used for the first time to bring both Hitler and Roosevelt into power. The ticker was used to overheat the stock market as ordinary people bid up stocks. This use of radio, TV, and the Internet for political messaging and wealth accumulation is one of the constants during this cycle of Uranus through the signs.
The two major events in the United States were racketeering and the stock market taking off as Uranus entered Aries. Racketeering consists of gangs threatening violence to businesses in exchange for regular payments of money to avoid the violence. In fact, the word “racketeering” was coined in 1927. Since anger and aggression is ruled by Aries and Mars, we can see that racketeering was inflamed by Uranus entering Aries.
When Uranus entered Aries in 1927 with Neptune was in Leo the great bull market started. It was to end as Neptune entered Virgo with the stock market crash of 1929 (see Neptune and Saturn in Virgo for information on the Leo – Virgo cusp). This speculative overheating showed the impulsiveness of Aries – and the fiery hope with Uranus there.
The British Broadcasting Corporation was created in 1927 as befits a new start for Uranian electronics when Uranus entered Aries. Being realistic and true to yourself became the vogue in the late 1920s – one must have freedom (Uranus) to act in a straightforward manner (Aries). In 1928 WGY sent out the first scheduled TV broadcasts.
In Germany, the economic system collapsed in 1927, two years before the U.S. collapse – the Nazi party quickly came in to explain how Jews and foreigners were to blame. In fact, Hitler’s rise to power was quick during this period. He was leader of a small party and forbidden to speak until 1927 – he took over leadership of Germany in January 1933. So the main rise to power of Hitler happened in the first six years of the seven-year Uranus in Aries period. With Uranus being the energy of excitement and agitation and Aries being aggressive (Hitler has his Moon, ruler of emotions and awareness, in Aries), it was a natural time for someone who is agitated and aggressive to come to power. Hitler used the radio to broadcast his message just as Franklin Roosevelt was using the radio in the U.S. in 1932.
In sports, ruled by Aries, there was innovation as well. The Harlem Globetrotters basketball team was organized by Abe Saperstein. Johnny Weismuller and Sonja Henie were in their athletic heyday – when women were allowed for the first time in the Olympics in 1928, Sonja Henie won the gold medal.
As Uranus entered Aries in 1927, most of the famous writings and films were tragedies:
“The Bridge of San Luis Rey”
“Death Comes for the Archbishop”
“Orphee”
“Elmer Gantry”
“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”
In 1928 Carl Jung wrote “Relationships between the Ego and the Unconscious” which is a fine book to write as the planet of perception, Uranus, crosses the Aries/Pisces cusp, the dividing line between the collective unconscious of Pisces and the strident personal action of Aries.
Dali started his surrealistic paintings, which are an idiosyncratic way (Uranus) of perceiving the world (Aries – ruler of the rising sign). People started to talk about “technocracy” – the domination (Aries) of technology (Uranus).
Teleprinters, teletypewriters, and photos via telegraph all started in these years.
1843-1851 Neptune in Aquarius, Pisces (1847), Pluto in Aries
The rights of the people against the aristocracy and the rich were the theme of Uranus here. The revolutions of 1848 and the start of Communism both started with this transit.
In 1846, the Irish Potato famine killed 2 million people out of a population of 8 million. The Irish were treated callously by the parliament and absentee landlords, who were more concerned about bureaucratic needs and rents than people dying. The famine started a mass migration (Aries) of Irish to the eastern seaboard of the U.S.
F.B. Morse started the first telegraph line in 1843. Skiing became a sport. The second law of thermodynamics was formulated – it states that entropy increases in an isolated system. The rules of baseball were codified. The Smithsonian Institute, to preserve technical and cultural history, was founded. This was a time of technical and sports innovations.
The revolutions of 1848 occurred with Uranus here. These revolutions were more a function of the Uranus – Pluto conjunction in Aries that came within orb in 1848 (see Uranus – Pluto conjunctions for more information). The “Communist Manifesto” was written by Marx and Engels in this year. In 1848 the telegraph, mail, and rail services, but most importantly the telegraph, enabled news of the revolutions against the absolute monarchs to spread from city to city in Europe.
The phrase “Manifest (Uranus rules perception) Destiny (Aries)”, that the U.S. should stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific, was coined in these years. It was implemented by the war with Mexico from 1846 to 1848 when we “appropriated” the northern part of Mexico (in fairness, the Mexicans “appropriated” it from the Native Americans). The California Gold Rush of 1849, the ‘49ers, drove people west with a desire to gain instant wealth – California was formerly part of Mexico.
“The Economist”, “Daily News” first cheap English newspaper, Associated Press, and “The New York Times” all started in these years.
1759-1768 Neptune in Leo, Virgo (1764), Pluto in Sagittarius, Capricorn (1762)
In 1760, George III became king of England – his reign lasted until 1820.
This was the period when Americans started their rebellion against Britain – after the Stamp Act in 1765, nine colonies met in New York to draw up a declaration of rights and liberties. However, most histories note the Peace of Paris in 1763 as the start of the rift between Britain and the U.S. – when Pluto entered Capricorn. During this period tensions increased culminating in the American Revolution in 1776.
In England, the ideas of the French and English philosophers that freedom and rights of individuals counted came into conflict with the autocratic nature of George III. So, the furthering of freedom and rights (Uranus in Aries) came into conflict with autocracy (also Uranus in Aries).
The potato became the most popular food in Europe.
The “Annual Register” and “The Public Ledger”, both London papers, started.
1675-1684 Neptune in Aquarius, Pluto in Cancer
This period was the end of the reign of Charles II, 1660 - 1685. The two party system of parliament was founded in England – one party wanted to increase the power of the king and the other to limit the power of the king and increase tolerance. This is the autocracy versus rights battle of Uranus in Aries. The parties came to be called the Whigs and the Tories.
The Academy of Sciences founded in Moscow. Newton explains the tides by combination of earth, Sun and Moon after publishing his work on Optics. Leibniz invents calculus. Romer discovers the speed of light. Halley catalogs the stars. This was a major, breakthrough period for science and mathematics.
1592-1599 Neptune in Leo, Pluto in Aries
Tycho Brae describes his astronomical findings; Kepler and Galileo proclaim their results. Drake and Raleigh explore the Americas. Shakespeare is writing many of his famous plays. Bruno burned at the stake for endorsing the Copernican heresy that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
This was soon after the defeat of the Spanish Armada. During this time other Armadas were put together, but all failed.
1508-1515 Neptune in Aquarius, Pluto in Sagittarius
In 1508, the Pope confirms that the German king automatically becomes head of the Holy Roman Empire. During this time Luther became a doctor of divinity – he would lodge his famous protest in 1517.
1509 is the beginning of the slave trade. Also, King Henry VIII became king in 1509 – his reign lasted until 1547.
In 1512 Copernicus stated that the earth revolves around the Sun. This was a major revolution (Uranus) in viewpoint (Aries).
